Running Civilization 3 Today
The easiest way to run Civilization 3 on a current Windows PC is the Complete edition from Steam ($4.99) or GOG ($5.99), which bundles the base game and both expansions; Steam still lists Windows 2000/XP requirements and rates the game Unsupported on Steam Deck, and GOG says DirectPlay must be installed on Windows 8 and later. No Mac version is sold today.
The simplest way to play Civilization 3 on a current PC is to buy the Complete edition, the base game with Play the World and Conquests, from Steam for $4.99 or DRM-free from GOG for $5.99 (prices on Oct 22, 2026). Both are Windows-only. Steam's page still gives the boxed requirements, "Windows 2000/XP (only)" with DirectX 9.0b, and Steam's compatibility check rates the game "Unsupported" on Steam Deck; GOG lists Windows 7, 8 and 10 and notes that DirectPlay must be installed on Windows 8 and later. Neither 2K nor Firaxis has published guidance for Windows 10 or 11, but people do play it there: Steam, whose own client has run only on Windows 10 and later since Jan 1, 2024, counted 1,211 players at 03:16 UTC on Oct 22, 2026. This page gives only steps a source documents.

Which edition to get
Both stores sell the same bundle. Steam's app 3910, on sale there since Oct 25, 2006 per Steam's store data, is "Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete": the base game, Play the World and Conquests, from Firaxis Games with 2K as publisher. GOG's edition, released on Nov 30, 2016 per GOG's catalog, is "the classic Civilization III plus both expansions", DRM-free, as one offline installer of about 1.36 GB with the manuals as a bonus. Buying advice and the history of each edition are on Complete Edition and Where to Buy.
The two differ in online play. The Steam version has had Steam multiplayer since 2K's update of Mar 16, 2015, while GOG's page lists only "Single-player" among its features; see Multiplayer.
Steam also hosts the Complete manual as a PDF at store.steampowered.com/manual/3910, the rulebook this viki cites throughout.
Windows 10 and 11
No official Windows 10 or 11 support statement exists. Steam's listing still names "Windows 2000/XP (only)" under its only requirements, labeled Recommended, while adding underneath that "Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions" (Steam). The requirement line matches the boxed Complete edition: its manual (pp. 1-2) targets Windows 98, Me, 2000 and XP with a 400 MHz Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 1.7 GB of disk and DirectX 9.0b.
Players run it on current Windows all the same. Steam counted 1,211 people playing at 03:16 UTC on Oct 22, 2026, all of them on a Steam client that requires Windows 10 or later, and the game holds a "Very Positive" rating from 7,012 of 7,839 reviews. Neither 2K nor Firaxis has said whether any problem is specific to Windows 11.
DirectPlay (GOG)
GOG names one requirement Steam does not: "DirectPlay must be installed on Windows 8 and later", per its store page. The game's multiplayer relies on it: the Complete manual (pp. 180-181) lists a "DirectPlay" port among those Internet games need, and LAN and direct games use ports 6073 and 2302 to 2400. GOG does not give installation steps on that page, and this page gives none from other sources.
Old discs, SafeDisc and the PCGames.de executable
Copy-protected discs from the 2000s stopped working on current Windows. Microsoft's update KB3086255 disabled the SafeDisc driver on Windows Vista, 7 and 8 in 2015, and Windows 10 does not support SafeDisc at all, PCWorld reported on Sep 24, 2015. PCWorld noted a command that re-enables the driver ("sc start secdrv") and that Microsoft warns of the security risk in doing so.
Civilization 3's retail discs are tied to this only by a fan source. The C3X README links a forum thread titled "Civ 3, Windows Update KB3086255, & SafeDisc" and says owners of a CD version can replace the game's executable with "the DRM-free executable available through PCGames.de" and then install C3X. No press source read here confirms which Civ 3 disc releases used SafeDisc.
Disc owners could also ask 2K for the online fix. When 2K moved multiplayer to Steam in 2015, it told owners of "a physical disc version" to submit a support request to receive the update; whether that offer still stands is not stated anywhere current.
Resolution and widescreen
Civilization 3 was built for a 1024x768 screen. The 2001 manual required a video card capable of 1024 x 768 at 16-bit color, and GameSpot's Conquests review of Nov 18, 2003 still wished it could run "in resolutions other than 1024x768". Neither Firaxis nor 2K has released a widescreen patch, and no source this viki accepts documents a widescreen fix, so none is given here.
Steam Deck and Linux
Steam rates Civilization 3 Complete "Unsupported" on Steam Deck in its compatibility report, and Steam's store data lists Windows only, with no Linux or Mac build. Valve and 2K publish no workaround.
Fans have worked around Windows. The C3X feature list includes "Fix graphical issues when running on Wine", the compatibility layer that runs Windows programs on Linux and macOS, and OpenCiv3 runs natively on 64-bit Linux (see below).
Mac
No Mac version of Civilization 3 is sold today. There were two: MacSoft's port by Westlake Interactive shipped on Jan 6, 2002 for Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS X (Macworld), and Aspyr's Civilization 3 Complete for Mac shipped on Jan 4, 2006 for Mac OS X 10.3.9 on a 500 MHz G4 at $49.99 (Macworld). The G4 is a PowerPC processor, which suggests the 2006 version does not run on current Macs, though no source tests it. Steam and GOG sell Windows builds only.
Mac players today rely on fan work. C3X's README points Mac users to a forum thread on "Installing, Playing and Modding C3C on Apple Silicon", and OpenCiv3 runs on macOS.
Fan fixes: C3X and OpenCiv3
C3X is a fan-made patch for the Conquests executable that fixes bugs and adds conveniences, and its README gives the install steps:
- Extract the mod into its own folder and copy that folder into the Conquests directory, the one containing Civ3Conquests.exe.
- Double-click INSTALL.bat; it reports success and backs up the original as "Civ3Conquests-Unmodded.exe". If the game is inside Program Files, Windows may require running INSTALL.bat as administrator.
- Keep the mod folder: the modded game still needs files from it. To uninstall, delete the modded executable and rename the backup to "Civ3Conquests.exe".
C3X works with the Steam and GOG versions of the Complete edition, saves made with it still load in the unmodded game, and its settings live in INI files. Online multiplayer with it "is not officially supported".
OpenCiv3 is a different approach: "an open-source, cross-platform, mod-oriented, modernized remake" of the game by fans, built with Godot and C#, per its site. Its current release, v0.3 "Dutch" Preview 1 (Dec 2025), is pre-alpha and runs on 64-bit Windows, Linux and macOS, either with placeholder art or with the graphics of a local Conquests or Complete install.
Frequently asked questions
Does Civ 3 work on Windows 10 and 11? Civilization 3 Complete is sold and played on current Windows: Steam's client has required Windows 10 or later since Jan 1, 2024, and Steam counted 1,211 players on Oct 22, 2026, though the store still lists only "Windows 2000/XP (only)" requirements and 2K has published no Windows 11 statement (Steam).
Can I play Civ 3 on a Mac? No current Mac version of Civilization 3 is sold: Aspyr's 2006 Mac Complete required a PowerPC G4 (Macworld), and Steam and GOG sell Windows builds only. The fan remake OpenCiv3 runs on macOS using an installed copy's graphics (OpenCiv3).
Does Civ 3 work on Steam Deck? Steam rates Civilization 3 Complete "Unsupported" on Steam Deck (Steam's compatibility report), and Valve and 2K publish no workaround.
Why won't my Civ 3 CD run on Windows 10? Many old copy-protected discs stopped working when Microsoft disabled the SafeDisc driver in 2015, and Windows 10 does not support it (PCWorld); the C3X README suggests CD owners of Civilization 3 replace the executable with the DRM-free one from PCGames.de (C3X).
Can Civ 3 run in widescreen? Civilization 3 was designed for 1024x768, GameSpot wished for other resolutions in its 2003 Conquests review (GameSpot), and no official widescreen patch was ever released.
Do I need DirectPlay for Civ 3? GOG says DirectPlay must be installed to run its Civilization 3 Complete on Windows 8 and later (GOG); Steam's page does not mention it.
Which is better for Civ 3, Steam or GOG? Both sell the same Civilization 3 Complete bundle for Windows; Steam's has online multiplayer through Steam since Mar 16, 2015 (2K on Steam), while GOG's is DRM-free with an offline installer and lists only single-player (GOG).
